The Psychology Behind How Burglars Work

Does your home seem to have some swirling, lingering scents in the air that attracts burglars( figuratively)? What is that little something ″special” that’s making your home so attractive to thieves?

To protect your home from burglars, you first need to understand how their mind works. Interviews from several sociologists reveal that most burglars are opportunists. They love to target homes that allow access without being noticed. Before making a decision on whether or not to attack a home, criminals use these factors: Accessibility, visibility, time and noise.

Accessibility: Generally, burglars want to sneak in and out of a house as quickly as possible. They understand that the longer it takes to get into a house, the higher the chances someone will see them and alert the police. You can use this fact to your advantage by making it difficult for intruders to gain access to your house. A great way of doing this would be to invite a locksmith and have them add an extra door lock at the floor level to reinforce security. According to research, 30% of all thefts are through an unlocked garage, doors or windows. As a homeowner, ensure that you always lock all the entry points at home.

Visibility factor: A neglected house is a target for thieves. Since Burglars want to go in and out unnoticed, neglecting home may be an indication that you’ve travelled. Allowing your grass to grow high, and lagging behind on repairs are all signs of a neglected home. Back doors, broken basement windows, garage doors all provide discreet entrances to your house. Broken Garage doors are particularly attractive to thieves. Other than this, installing security lights in your compound will also ward off thieves. Poorly lit houses at night and those that are surrounded by bushes entice uninvited guests. Especially if the shrubs are high above locks, windows and entrances

Neighbors: Lack of possible witnesses has everything to do with visibility. Turns out that close-knit neighborhoods might play a role in the security of your home. Reports from burglars, listed lack of proximity from other people as a top factor of homes they found attractive. Proximity included inconsistent patterns such as neighbors, traffic, and how often people walk by your home. The more the people present, the higher the chances of a 9-1-1 call. In the mind of a burglar, every person who passes your home could potentially get him caught. So, maintaining a friendly neighborhood is a factor to keeping thieves off your home. Getting to know your neighbors and requesting them to keep an eye when you’re away may deter thieves.

Your furry friend: Burglars also consider the noise factor before picking their target. Barking dogs and home security systems have also been known to keep the bad guys away. As mentioned earlier, noise is a factor when burglars are deciding whether or not to steal from your house.

Burglars never target a home randomly, they calculate and ascertain that their mission will attract no one’s attention. Enhancing your key locks, proper home maintenance and maintaining good relations with neighbors may seem trivial, but will increase your home’s security.
