Protecting your Home when you’re on Vacation
locksmithMAN • Jul 18, 2019

The best way to enjoy your Summer vacation is the carefree way; and the best way to be carefree is when you have full faith that your home is protected and secure. In this blog post, the lock installation and home security experts here at LocksmithMAN CA will provide you with some valuable tips on how to protect your home while you are away on vacation.

Install a Monitored Security System

We recommend installing a smart, monitored security system that combines entranceway sensors, motion detectors, and alarms in order to keep your home safe. Ideal systems will notify you via Wifi or Bluetooth / Cloud connections in real-time, even if you’re halfway across the world. Make sure that your security system is monitoring environmental factors including flood sensors, carbon monoxide detectors, and smoke detectors.

Smart Thermostat

Consider installing a smart thermostat for your house. This can sense if for some reason your home is a strange temperature, and can even be controlled at a distance to make sure that your home is comfortable when you arrive home. Smart thermostats often have geofencing features that detect when you’re away, and make the temperature more energy-efficient until you return.

Don’t Brag About your Vacation

Don’t tell the entire world that you’re going on vacation – this includes on your voicemail, social media, or even email auto reply. We recommend waiting to post vacation photos until you’re back home – but if you insist on sharing vacation content on social media, make sure that your privacy settings are so that only your friends can see it.

Security Lights

Install motion sensor lights around your entrance ways that can act as an automatic deterrent the moment strange activity around your house is detected.

Lock Protocols

Make sure all doors and windows are locked, and that all exterior doors are reinforced with a high quality deadbolt lock. Don’t EVER keep a spare key under your doormat. Give spare keys to trusted neighbors or friends, and ask them to periodically come check on your house’s security while you are away.

Visible Valuebles

Try to close the blinds in rooms that have valuables like large electronics like flatscreen TVs. We recommend concealing game consoles and electronics, and making sure that all credit cards, cash, jewelry, and smartphones are put away out of sight – especially through the vantage point of a window!

Suspend Mail Delivery

A giant pile of unread mail or newspapers signals to crafty burglars that nobody is home and that there is an opportunity to strike – don’t give criminals this opportunity! Arrange to have the USPS hold your mail at your local post office for 30 days, or even set up mail forwarding or arrange for a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail for you.
