The garage door is the heaviest and largest moving object in any home. Avoid messing with it . According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s NEISS (National Electronic Injury Surveillance System) nationwide data hospital emergency departments treat more than 15,000 injuries each year that result from garage doors.

Ensure your safety with regular maintenance and by following these simple tips.

1. Safety Sensors Need to be Checked

The safety sensors of the garage door opener are attached to the rails. It is on the rails that the garage door rides. This is usually about six inches off the ground. The closing garage door direction is reversed if anyone walks under it.

Check the sensor by pushing the control button. This starts the process of closing the garage door. Before the garage door closes, place an object under the door. The sensor needs to stop the door from closing and ensure that it reverses. If the garage door fails to reverse, you need to get in touch with a garage door opener professional. The technician will inspect the safety sensors and make any repairs or adjustments.

2. Secret Passwords

Many companies, including Craftsman, have garage openers that enable you to set user-specific and one-time codes. This is useful if you have a package to be delivered or if your family is visiting. This ensures access and keeps the passcode of the garage door opener a secret. Apps of new smartphones offer more control. They enable you to remotely open and close the door.

3. Avoid Free Rides

Kids love swinging and riding up the garage door by hanging on its door handle. This needs to be avoided. Garage doors should not be played with and it is important to teach kids about it.

4. Take Care of Your Fingers

Teach children the importance of keeping their hands away from the joints (between panels) of the garage door when it is closing. Nationwide 7,500 injuries of fingers getting caught in the garage door section are reported by NEISS each year. New garage door models come equipped with pinch protection. This reduces the risk of finger and hand injuries.

5. Ensure Children Don’t Access Garage Door Opener Remotes

Transmitters need to be hidden from children. The wall control of the garage door opener needs to be at least five feet from the ground. This ensures children don’t access it.

6. Check the Auto-Reverse

Garage door openers manufactured after 1991 have a reversing mechanism. This feature ensures that the door changes direction if it touches anything in its path. Check the auto-reverse feature by opening the garage door and placing a complete roll of paper towels in the center of the door. Close the garage door by pushing on the button. When the door touches the paper towel, it needs to reverse. If it is not working properly, you need to adjust the downward force of the garage door or call a professional technician to get it fixed.

2. Check the Force

The garage door needs to stop if it is pushed down when it is rising or push up on the bottom of the door when it is lowered. The force settings need to adjusted if it is not working properly.
