Enhancing Child Car Safety

As parents, we fret over all manner of choices that tap into the instinct of keeping our children alive, whole, and protected. We will quickly heed to warnings about crib bumpers and lead paints. We will also put locks on cabinets when we have crawling babies. Not to forget, we will go to great lengths to emphasize to the older ones about stranger danger and what they should do when they get lost in public.

Ironically, however, most parents struggle with child car safety. It’s not uncommon to find a car driving down at 65 miles per hour with three or four children all crammed at the back, bouncing around, and clearly unbuckled. A whole lot of parents also drive around holding their babies on the laps. Even for those parents who fasten their kid’s seat belts, in a count of 300 parents, 95% make mistakes. A research published in the Journal of Pediatrics revealed that 86% of parents positioned their newborns in the seat wrongly,77% incorrectly installed the seat, and 69% of babies had a loose harness. In addition, more than a third positioned the retainer clip too low.

Seat belts, car seats, and car boosters

As a parent, it’s important that you educate yourself on the Canadian laws regarding seat belts, car seats and booster seats requirements for children of different ages. By law, there are different requirements for infants, toddlers, and the older children. When shopping for a car, be on the lookout for some safety features. For instance, cars with latches make better purchases than those whose car seats are only secured with a seat belt. A latch secures the car seats with anchors and tethers enhancing your child’s security.

Also, for child increased child safety, cars with rear shoulder belts are a better pick. In most cars, you will find shoulder belts in the front seats and not the rear. Cars with adjustable anchors are the best option when you have kids since they allow you to secure the belt across the chest.

Child Safety Locks

Child safety locks are usually in the rear doors placed in such a way that when the door is closed, they can’t be accessed. Their main use of child locks is to provide safety to the little ones especially when in transit. Child safety locks are generally easy to activate with most of them having a small switch on the edge of the door.

Of course, each car is different. Some cars feature the child lock as a rotary mechanism allowing operation only using a key and others, the driver can activate the lock electronically from the drivers’ position. If you notice any difficulty operating the child lock always invite an automotive locksmith professional to have it repaired or replaced—your child’s safety is one of those things you shouldn’t compromise

Other safety belts, booster seats, and child safety locks, to keep the toddler’s calmer, distract them with interesting toys. Also, make sure that the car has adequate airflow and temperatures— it should neither be too hot nor too cold.
